The world feels heavy right now.
Turn on the news, scroll through your phone, or listen to everyday conversations, and you’ll sense it—tension, uncertainty, division. There’s a weight many people are carrying, even if they can’t quite put it into words.
And yet, all around us, something very different is happening. Trees are budding. Flowers are blooming. The days are longer. Life is quietly, steadily pushing forward.
Just earlier this month, many of us paused to reflect on Easter—a reminder that even the darkest moments are not the end of the story. While that day has passed on the calendar, its message lingers: renewal is possible, even in the most broken places.
The question is—do we believe that’s still true for us today?
Growth Begins Where Things Break
We often think of renewal as something clean and easy—like flipping a switch or starting fresh without looking back. But real renewal doesn’t work that way.
In my time serving at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, I walked some of the most sacred ground in our country. It’s a place marked not by comfort, but by sacrifice. Not by ease, but by the cost of service. And yet, it’s also a place that points to something deeper—legacy, purpose, and the enduring impact of a life lived with virtue.
What I have learned over my life is this: Some of the most meaningful growth in our lives begins in the very places we would have chosen to avoid.
Brokenness isn’t the end of the story. Often, it’s where the story truly begins.
Nature Doesn’t Rush—But It Always Moves Forward
Spring gives us a powerful picture of this truth.
No tree blooms overnight. No field turns green in a single day. Beneath the surface, there’s a long, unseen process taking place—roots stretching deeper, nutrients being drawn up, life preparing to emerge.
It’s slow. It’s quiet. But it’s steady. In many ways, our lives work the same way.
We all go through seasons where growth feels invisible—when progress seems stalled, when prayers feel unanswered, when the path forward isn’t clear. But just because we can’t see what’s happening doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
Growth is still taking place beneath the surface.
Perseverance isn’t about dramatic moments. More often, it’s about choosing to keep going when nothing feels like it’s changing.
When the World Feels Unsteady
It’s impossible to ignore the uncertainty around us right now. Conflict, division, and unrest dominate the headlines. And while we may have different perspectives, one thing is shared—we all feel the effects of a world that seems, at times, unsteady.
But here’s what I’ve come to believe: We may not control what’s happening around us, but we do control what we cultivate within us.
In times like these, virtues aren’t just ideals—they’re anchors.
- Perseverance keeps us moving forward
- Hope reminds us that the story isn’t finished
- Faith steadies us when outcomes are unclear
- Love calls us to rise above division
This is where real leadership begins—not in reacting to the noise, but in choosing who we will be in the middle of it.
How to Step Into Renewal Today
Renewal isn’t something we passively wait for. It’s something we actively step into. Here are three simple ways to begin:
1. Reflect Honestly
Take a moment to ask yourself: Where do I feel stuck, discouraged, or broken right now? You don’t have to fix everything today—but you do have to be honest about where you are.
2. Choose Perseverance
What is one small step you can take forward? Not a giant leap—just a step. Progress is built one decision at a time.
3. Invest in Others
One of the fastest ways to experience renewal is to give it away. Encourage someone. Serve someone. Lift someone else up. Renewal has a way of multiplying when it’s shared.
A Season for More Than Just Change
Spring reminds us that new life is possible—but it also reminds us that new life comes at a cost. Seeds must be buried before they grow. Roots must stretch before anything is seen above the surface.
The same is true in our lives.
Renewal isn’t reserved for a holiday or a season. It’s a decision we make, again and again, to keep moving forward… to keep growing… to keep believing that something good can come from what feels broken. Surrounded by the evidence of new life all around us, we’re reminded of a simple but powerful truth:
What looks like the end may actually be the beginning.
So wherever you find yourself today—whether in a season of clarity or confusion, strength or struggle—don’t lose heart. Growth may be happening in ways you can’t yet see.
And renewal may be closer than you think.
