Football season is off and running, and the excitement is tangible. As stadiums fill with passionate fans and teams take the field, a recent trend has gained momentum—players wearing virtues like courage, honor, or sacrifice on their jerseys instead of their last names. This small but profound gesture sends a powerful message: there are ideals and values that transcend personal recognition.
I love this concept because it reminds us that there is something greater than ourselves—shared values that bind us together. On the field, these values aren’t just words; they’re the foundation of teamwork and unity. A team is more than a collection of individuals; it’s a collective force moving towards a common goal. And it’s these virtues that form the glue, helping to unite players from different backgrounds and experiences into one cohesive unit.
This trend in sports mirrors the central theme of the book I am currently writing, “Surrounded by Heroes.” Throughout America’s history, we have been blessed with countless heroes, both past and present, who exemplify these virtues—those same American values that have the power to unite us. Whether on the battlefield, in our communities, or through quiet acts of selflessness and gratitude, these heroes remind us of the strength found in shared ideals.
Lessons from the Field: Values that Unite Us
As coaches and teams across the country rally around what unites and motivates them this season, we as a nation can learn from their example. Just as teams strive toward victory by embracing the values they hold dear; we too can forge a path forward by focusing on what unites us as Americans. The principles of freedom, justice, and equality have long been our guiding lights, but it’s also the foundational American values such as duty, humility, perseverance, and love that can lead us toward a brighter, more unified future.
In an age where division often dominates the headlines, it can be easy to forget that there is so much we agree on. We may have different perspectives, political affiliations, or life experiences, but at the core, we all seek the same things: freedom, opportunity, and a better future for our children. These are not partisan dreams; they are human aspirations. When we choose to elevate values that transcend our differences—when we choose unity over division, gratitude over entitlement, selflessness over selfishness—we move closer to healing our nation.
The football field offers us a glimpse of this truth. No team can succeed if its members are divided. Victory comes through collaboration, trust, and shared purpose. In the same way, America’s greatest victories—whether in times of war, crisis, or triumph—have come when we unite around our shared values and strive together toward a common goal.
Beyond Football: A Path Toward National Unity
The challenges we face today are significant, but the solution remains within our grasp. By embracing the values that defined the lives of our country’s heroes, and shaped our national identity, we can find a way forward. Let us not lose sight of the virtues that bind us together, for in them lies the strength to overcome our divisions and emerge a stronger, more unified nation.
This fall, as we cheer for our favorite teams, let’s also rally around the virtues that can lead us to victory as a country. Just as players take the field with courage and determination, we can step forward with the same resolve to build a future grounded in unity, honor, and the timeless values that make America great.
